Talk about Hong Kong
I created this website while pandemic hit this country, and California residents had to shelter-in-place, starting March 2019. On one hand, I said, “Hooray! No more classes for the rest of the semester. ” After a week or two, I started to get bored and realized how much I was going to miss the rest of the spring semester and summer. I had just started my favorite varsity volleyball season in which I was selected as team captain. After 3 competitive games, we had to end the season. Very sad! I was looking forward to participate in Boy State, in which I was selected by my school and the local American Legion Post, in June at the California State University. That had to be canceled. Our family vacations, church summer camp, and friends gatherings all had to be given up. My 2 scheduled SAT tests were all canceled. This project came into my mind. I consider myself half Hongkonger because of my mom. I have been following the anti-extradition and democracy movements that turned into violent confrontation between the Hong Kong Police Force and the protesters since June of 2019. Then, the Chinese Community Party decided to tighten their grips over Hong Kong’s fundamental freedom by rushing into passing the New Hong Kong Security Law on July 1, 2020. I decided to create a website, to record the everchanging news in this unique city of the world. I had been there several times. I just love that international city – so full of lives, friendliness, and dynamics. The most important of all, they believe in fundamental freedom and values just like us in America. The entire movement was very emotional to many. The unity, courage, and their demands for democracy not only inspired many local Hongkongers but also to the western world.
I was planning to travel with my mom to Hong Kong in August 2020, quarantining for 14 days then witnessing one of the most important legislative council elections in Hong Kong history. However, the Chinese and Hong Kong government decided to postpone the election for at least one year, citing it is necessary amid a spike in coronavirus infections (121 cases on July 31). The opposition, on the other hand, accused the government of using pandemic as an excuse to stop people from voting. I consider this project a hobby, but at the same time, I am hoping these messages can be spread in America. They need our help and support. God bless Hong Kong!
